Evergreen perennial

Best Varieties:
There are many species of artemisia. Southernwood has finer, more feathery foliage than wormwood. The genus includes shrubs and ground covering varieties. Plants contain volitile oils making the silvery foliage highly fragrant.

Sowing:
Strike cuttings in late spring.

Growing Habit:
This is a loose, raggy shrub that needs pruning to keep it full and dense. Pruning is best done in early spring before new growth takes off.

Growing Conditions:
Can tolerate drought, but prefers winter rain. Light yearly fertilising with blood and bone is all it really needs. Flowers only in warmer regions.

Companions:
All vegetables. Plant near chicken house so that chickens can eat foliage to protect against intestinal worms.

Problems:
Fungal problems and root rot only in high humidity.

Uses:
Diluted wormwood "tea" is used for control of snails and caterpillars in gardens.
Shrubs will repel insects from nearby plants.
Dried leaves are used to repel moths in clothes cupboards.
It is believed to have antiseptic, antispasmodic and worm repelling qualities.
