Type of plant: perennial but best replaced every 3 years
Best Varieties:
- Common thyme - low plant to 30 cm high, with mauve, pink or white flowers.
- Lemon thyme - milder.
- Silver thyme - silvery, grey leaves.
- Creeping thyme - small leaf, good for ground covering.
Sowing: Seed can be sown in autumn or spring and germination should take 1 week. Better to divide mature plants and replant afresh. Can be layered or grown from cuttings.
Growing Habit: Low creeping plant. Creeping thyme is a ground covering variety.
Growing Conditions: Suits cool climates, especially creeping variety. Prefers slightly alkaline soil so add some lime when planting if needed. Likes drier soil, free draining. Cut back after flowering in summer.
Companions: Cabbage, roses, salad burnett.
Problems: Can become woody after a few years. Root rot can occur if soil too wet. Red spider mite.
Uses: Used with other herbs in "bouquet garni" for cooking. Infusion can aid in digestion. Steam inhalation is said to help with breathing and skin problems due to anti- bacterial effect. Flowers attract bees in companion planting. Lemon thyme herb pillow can help with relaxation and promote deep sleep.
