PEST OF THE MONTH - Shot hole
What's it look like?
As the name suggests, shot hole is characterised by leaves covered with small holes. The holes start as small brown spots and later dry and fall out leaving the hole. The stems and branches can be affected with brown spots also and often produce a clear gooey gum. Fruit, similarly can carry dry brown rasied spots all over it.

What it attacks
Shot hole affects stone fruit plants and almonds.
What to do before it arrives
Make sure plants are not overcrowded and have plenty of air circulation. Prune out any inward facing branches. Treat regularly with seaweed spray to build strength and resistance.
What to do if you already have problems
A winter application of Bordeaux or copper oxychloride can sometimes be the best treatment. Remove any diseased leaves and fruit to stop the disease spreading. Chamomile or garlic sprays are said to help with control when fruit is developing but they must be applied regularly (usually about every week or two).
