How many plants for average family: 50 per family
Type of plant: annual
Best Varieties: Kohl rabi comes in a variety of colours from white, green to purple. Try Azure Star, Blusta or White Vienna .
Sowing: Best sown direct but needs constant moisture. Can be sown in punnets and transplanted when weather is warm enough.
Growing Habit: Kohl rabi is not a root crop vegetable, but a swollen stem. Yet it is eaten for its bulb-like tuber.
Growing Conditions: Kohl rabi is part of the cabbage family so grow it in your cabbage bed. It will need plenty of water and nitrogen to do well. Apply Seaweed solution for better development. Good drainage is needed and regular fertilizer.
Harvest kohl rabi when it's about the size of a tennis ball before it has a chance to get woody. Eat the leaves as well as the tuber. Kohl rabi can be chopped and eaten raw or cooked in stirfry, casseroles or sauted. It has a flavour something like a cross between a turnip and broccoli.
Companions: Marigold, lovage, marjoram. Avoid rue and tomato.
Problems: If not grown quickly with good fertilizer it can become woody and unpalatable. Kohl rabi can bolt to seed before big enough, some varieties are better than others.
