How many plants for average family:
3 or 4 plants per family

Type of plant:
Low growing evergreen perennial.

Best Varieties:
Plain varieties as well as golden or 'Aureum' varieties are available.

Sowing:
Feverfew self seeds readily (sometimes too much). Sow seeds in spring. Take cuttings in spring also and place in small pots in a shady locations. Divide plants when too big and plant elsewhere in the garden immediately then keep moist until settled.

Growing Habit:
The plant is related to the daisy family and grows similarly but doesn't get as woody over time. Small white flowers appear in summer.

Growing Conditions:
Feverfew can grow in a variety of conditions, but will grow best in well drained, fertile soils. Too much fertiliser will produce more leaves at the expense of flowers. It can tolerate dry conditions but full sun is needed for flowering. Because it self seeds readily it will fill up a border quickly. Seeds will germinate in cracks and crevices and can be a nuisance.

Companions:
Good for attracting predators and repelling some insects around patios and vegetable gardens.

Problems:
Frost sensitive.
Caterpillars.
Snails and slugs can defoliate the plant.
Rotting can occur if the plant is kept too moist.

Uses:
Feverfew has been shown to alleviate symptoms of migrane when 2 or 3 fresh leaves are eaten daily. Leaves are quite bitter and can sometimes cause mouth ulcers.
It can also be used for repelling moths when dried and stored.
Golden feverfew is a good foliage contrast in the garden.

Caution should always be used when taking herbs for medicinal purposes. Seek medical advice.
