VEGGIE OF THE MONTH - ChokoName: Choko
How many plants for average family: 1 or 2 per family.
Type of plant: perennial vine.
Best Varieties:
Sowing: Simply take a whole choko and place it in a dark cupboard and wait for it to sprout. Plant it out into the garden when the sprouting tip is about 2 or 3 cm long. Bury the choko in the ground with the tip just above the surface.
NB: ONLY 1 CHOKO IS NEEDED (This is a reference for my Hawkesbury College students who tried to convince me that you need 2 for successful fruit - it is only an old wives tale!)
Growing Habit: Chokos are vigorous climbers, renown for growing over the old outdoor dunny!
Give it some sort of support like a pergola, trellis, lattice or even a tree stump to grow over.
Growing Conditions: Fertilise the soil in spring with some blood and bone and manure and that's about all you'll need to do.
If you keep up a good water supply, then you'll have chokos for a good 8 months in warmer areas.
Companions:
Problems: None that I know.
They're as tough as old boots!
